Tax Year 2026
Do I need to file taxes if I had no income?
No — but it can pay to.
No income means no requirement — with one health-insurance exception, and a few reasons filing can still put money in your pocket.
The Rule
With zero income there’s no filing requirement. One exception: if you got advance subsidies for Health Insurance Marketplace coverage, you must file to reconcile them — even with no income at all.
“No Job” ≠ “No Income”
Unemployment benefits, early retirement-account withdrawals, and interest or investment gains all count as income toward the filing thresholds, even with no paycheck all year.
Why File Anyway
Refundable credits and withheld tax are only paid to filers, and filing starts the 3-year clock that protects future refund claims. A $0-income return is also useful proof of income status for some benefits and applications.
