Tax Year 2026
Do I have to pay taxes on Venmo or PayPal payments?
Only if it’s income.
Rent splits and dinner repayments aren’t taxable. Money you earn through the apps is — with or without a 1099-K.
Never Taxable
Personal transfers: splitting rent or dinner, repayments between friends, gifts. Also selling your own used stuff at a loss — the $800 couch you sold for $200 created no taxable income.
Taxable
Money earned: business sales, freelance services, reselling for profit. It counts toward the $400 self-employment rule and the regular filing thresholds, exactly like cash or check income.
The 1099-K Confusion, Settled
After years of changing rules, the 2026 threshold for apps to send Form 1099-K is back at $20,000 and 200 transactions. Most people get no form — but the law didn’t change: income is reportable whether or not a form arrives.
